FUN on BIKES - for 2nd, 3rd & 4th Graders; Coed
Learn to do obstacle courses, minor maintenance, and enjoy a variety of games: the slow race, water bottle relay, limbo, and the bike part identification game. Learn how to balance better through some fun drills. Challenging trail riding techniques/skills appropriate for each individual will be taught. Participants will learn about proper sidewalk riding etiquette and safety, as well as rules of the trail and road. Class will be on the school grounds with possible short excursions in town. Equipment needed: a bike (that has had a recent maintenance check), a properly fitting helmet, water bottle and appropriate clothing for biking. Class will be held regardless of weather. The indoor space will be on the stage in the Tracy Hall Gym except on May 2nd when group would meet in the Tracy Multi-purpose room. Still meet & pick up on the Green. The focus for our spring cross-country running group will be easing your winter body into running shape. The program will provide a perfect introduction to the sport, where all are welcome regardless of prior running experience. Coed MOUNTAIN BIKING for 5th - 7th Graders
Join this class for fun, while you expand your knowledge on how to be a safe and responsible mountain bike rider. On our first ride/day, riders will learn what to wear and bring, and how to ride safely in town as a pack. Our rides will be on trails as well as dirt and paved roads in Norwich. Focus will be on safe riding, and skills for trail riding. Other topics covered will be trail building/maintenance, bicycle care, best food and clothing for treks, and map reading. All levels welcome. Class will meet beside the Bandstand on the Green. Class will be held regardless of weather so please dress appropriately. If weather is terrible, class will move indoors. The indoor space will be on the stage in the Tracy Hall Gym except on May 3rd, 17th & 24th when group would meet in the Tracy Hall Multi-purpose room. Still meet & pick up on the Green. Equipment needed: tuned mountain bike, a properly fitting helmet, water bottle and snack, with means to carry them. Gloves and protective eye wear are highly recommended. An introduction to Baseball and Softball skills, mastery of the basic components of the sport and preparing for games will be the progression we implement. Having all participants comprehend the basic rules will be a goal. Concentration is on building and improving individual batting, throwing and fielding. The focus is on having fun practicing with friends, through games and stations, encouraging individual skill development. We will also play Hanover & Lyme teams starting May 10th on Thursdays at 6pm. Join in on the fun! A royal blue Norwich T-shirt is required. They are available for purchase on-line &/or at the Recreation office in Tracy Hall for $10. The soft “Incrediball” is used. This multi-level class will be a moderate-to-strong physical practice with modifications and variations to meet each student’s level of experience. Twice weekly the Upper Valley Fencing Club (www.UpperValleyFencingClub.com) provides ability-appropriate challenges for fencers with a broad range of experience. Communal improvement of form, technique and skills is the primary focus during the formal programmed foil portion of each session, leading to open fencing in all three weapons in the latter portion. Accommodation for several younger students may be possible - contact Paul or Ralph (see below). Those who wish to fence "on the box" should be prepared to purchase their own electric fencing gear. Beginners practice from 6-7PM, intermediate and advanced thereafter. Parents are encouraged to try a class alongside their child to experience the joys and benefits of fencing. The "Van Lodostov" Family Circus Camp is returning to Norwich for 2012. Some of the exciting things participants will learn how to do include: Diablo, Multi-person Circus Bike Tricks, Clowning (ranging from mime to pie throwing), Tight Wire, Acrobatics, Plate Spinning, Fabrique, Stilt-Walking, Juggling, Unicycling, Pyramids, Rola Bola, Rolling Globe, Mini Tramp, and Aerials. Campers will be introduced to everything, then given the opportunity to specialize and concentrate on what interests them most. Get ready to have a wonderful experience that you’ll never forget. We are taking registrations now so you can have 2 weeks of fun slotted into your summer plans. For the camp, please wear fitted, comfortable clothing and bring clean, light athletic shoes &/or aqua shoes and bring a substantial lunch and drink. Join our program to drastically improve your tone and fitness this summer. We are offering an extremely convenient format to accommodate vacations, etc.. Classes include station-style workouts that focus on all-over body strengthening, as well as metabolic workouts that include balance and flexibility components. You will have a custom-designed, individual fitness plan addressing exercise, body composition and nutritional counseling.
New participants will begin with a private meeting to discuss goals and put together a plan for the summer. Aimee will design an exercise routine custom fit for your body and objectives, analyze body composition (percentage of body fat and BMI) and help you develop an online nutrition tracking tool. For Fall 2012, Tim Gardner will be the Head Coach for Kindergarten Soccer and Carl Tracy will be the Head Coach for 1st Grade Soccer. Both groups will meet Saturday mornings. Our 2nd Grade Head Coach is Dan French, with many assistants. We are expanding our 2nd Grade Soccer program to twice a week - days TBD.

3rd - 6th Grade Parents - If you are tired of spending weekends traveling afar to soccer games at the expense of family time, consider our affordable, convenient and competitive alternative. We are actively working to improve our Soccer Program for the Fall with both coaching and player clinics. We are planning for lots of practice time for these teams and plenty of games within the local upper Valley area. Your children can bond with their classmates and feel proud of representing Norwich. There is equal playing time for all who attend practices, and want to play in games. We have some excellent coaches lined up and are working on getting more. Season runs 9/4 - 10/31. Learn to do obstacle courses, minor maintenance, and enjoy a variety of games: the slow race, water bottle relay, limbo, and the bike part identification game. Learn how to balance better through some fun drills. Challenging trail riding techniques/skills appropriate for each individual will be taught. Participants will learn about proper sidewalk riding etiquette and safety, as well as rules of the trail and road. Class will meet beside the Bandstand on the Green and will be on the school grounds with possible short excursions in town. Equipment needed: a bike (that has had a recent maintenance check), a properly fitting helmet, water bottle and appropriate clothing for biking Class will be held regardless of weather. Coed MOUNTAIN BIKING for 5th - 7th Graders**
Join this class for fun, while you expand your knowledge on how to be a safe and responsible mountain bike rider. On our first ride/day, riders will learn what to wear and bring, and how to ride safely in town as a pack. Our rides will be on trails as well as dirt and paved roads in Norwich. Focus will be on safe riding, and skills for trail riding. Other topics covered will be trail building/maintenance, bicycle care, best food and clothing for treks, and map reading. All levels welcome. Class will meet beside the Bandstand on the Green. Class will be held regardless of weather so please dress appropriately. If weather is terrible, class will move indoors. The indoor space will be on the stage in the Tracy Hall Gym except on May 3rd, 17th & 24th when group would meet in the Tracy Hall Multi-purpose room. Still meet & pick up on the Green. An introduction to Baseball and Softball skills, mastery of the basic components of the sport and preparing to play games will be the progression we implement. FENCING for ages 11 & up
Twice weekly the Upper Valley Fencing Club (www.UpperValleyFencingClub.com) provides ability-appropriate challenges for fencers with a broad range of experience. Communal improvement of form, technique and skills is the primary focus during the formal programmed foil portion of each session, leading to open fencing in all three weapons in the latter portion. Accommodation for several younger students may be possible - contact Paul or Ralph (see below). Those who wish to fence "on the box" should be prepared to purchase their own electric fencing gear. Term runs April 16th through June 27th (11 weeks), in the Tracy Hall Gym on Mondays & Wednesdays, 6 - 8:30pm (Beginners from 6-7PM, intermediate and advanced thereafter) No class on 5/2 or 5/28. Parents are encouraged to try a class alongside their child to experience the joys and benefits of fencing. HEALTH COACHING - Six Behaviors in Six Weeks: This 6 week program is designed to inspire participants to actively engage in making behavioral changes that will improve their health and wellness. Food and behavioral questionnaires will be completed by participants to help them target desired changes in the areas of diet, exercise, sleep modification or stress reduction. The class will meet in the Burton House, Main St., Norwich on Mondays, April 23rd & 30th, May 7th –21st and June 4th from 10–10:30am. The class was developed and will be run by Dr. Chris Hastings who has experience as an Olympic athlete, US Ski Team development coach and nutrition professor at Vermont Community College. Please look them over and include them in your family's plans. Our offerings allow a lot of flexibility and sign ups are accepted beginning mid-June and on an ongoing basis thereafter. You can put together a summer full of diversity and fun at an affordable price. Details not marked are still in progress/TBD. Refund Policy: The program fee, less $10 will be returned if participants attend only one, or no classes, and call or write to request it. This amount can also be used as a credit toward our other programs.
Late Fee for Spring Team Sports An additional $10 is charged after 4/23 for all travel teams.
Scholarships: The Norwich Recreation Council would like to include all resident children in its Baseball and Lacrosse programs.
