HIGHLANDS SOCCER CLUB RECREATION PROGRAM The Highlands Soccer Club Recreation and Competitive Programs in Washington County, VA is sponsored by the Highlands Soccer Club, Inc., which is a non-profit corporation registered with the Virginia State Corporation Commission. The Club has a Board of Directors. There are two recreational soccer programs: 1. Preschool Program: 3 and 4-year olds, preschool program consists of six clinics held on Saturday at the lower field next to the Coomes Recreation Center. Established teams are not formed for this program. Parents are strongly encouraged to attend the clinics to assist in child control as well as learn the basic skills of soccer with their children.2. Kindergarten through 12th grade: Players are divided into grade groups and play scheduled games within their grade groups. Teams are formed with the primary purpose of skill balance. We will consider special requests for team assignment if the balance is not impinged. All players play an equal amount of time regardless of skill level or experience. The recreation program is designed on the “small sided soccer concept.” Smaller fields and smaller teams are used. This allows players a greater opportunity to “go to the ball” and thereby learn the basic skills faster and also reduces player bunching while they learn positioning concepts and skills. Certified referees are used in the 1st-8th grade to control the games. Some rules are modified for recreational soccer to enhance safety for the players. Your coach will go over these rules with you. ALL REFEREES ARE TO BE TREATED WITH THE UTMOST RESPECT AT ALL TIMES.Objective:1. Fun2. Teach Soccer fundamentals and teamwork3. Provide a safe environment4. Success is measured by the above and our improvements, not by wins and losses. HIGHLANDS SOCCER CLUB COMPETITIVE PROGRAM The competitive soccer program is designed to accommodate players that want a more challenging setting than the recreational program and have the skill and desire to develop their soccer game in a setting of competitive matches against skilled opponents. HSC currently has several active competitive teams and continues to recruit for additional teams as skilled players allow. The Competitive Soccer Program consists of two season: Fall (August – November) and Spring (February - June). Additional games and practices may be scheduled as agreed by the coach and parents. A TYPICAL SEASON Competitive team games generally come in two catagories: Tournament games and Tri-cities League games. A typical season would normally include 2-3 tournaments and 6-8 league games. Teams generally practice or play games three times a week during the seasons. Practices range in length from 1-1/2 hours to 2 hours, but may be longer or shorter on specific days. Players are expected to attend all practices and games except when prior academic or family travel commitments prevent attendance. A significant difference in the competitive program is that playing time is based on performance, skill level and participation at practices. Players are selected for any competitive team based on a tryout process. Tryouts are typically conducted in mid-May and are announced in the Washington County News, Bristol Herald-Courier, on the HSC website, and through the recreational coaches. For more information about tryouts continue to check this site.
