Upper Division Baseball Tryouts
Tryouts are required for our baseball upper divisions (Majors, Minors and AAA), even for players who have already played in them before. Players can indicate their preferred division as part of the registration process, but final division assignments will depend on tryout performance. Players aged 8 or 9 who try out but are not drafted will be reassigned to AA.
Softball Majors Tryouts
Tryouts are required for Softball Majors players. The purpose of this event is to assist us in putting together evenly-balanced teams, and to ensure that all players have the skills necessary to be successful in Softball Majors. Players aged 9 or 10 who sign up for Softball Majors but are not approved for this division will be reassigned to Softball Minors.
Challenger Division
HLL's Challenger Division enables boys and girls with physical and mental challenges, ages 5-18, or up to age 22 if still enrolled in high school, to enjoy the game of baseball along with the millions of other children who participate in this sport worldwide. Teams are set up according to abilities, rather than age, and can include as many as 15-20 players. Challenger games can be played as T-ball games, coach pitch, player pitch, or a combination of the three. For more information, please contact our Challenger Division Director at challenger@hllbaseball.org.
Residence Requirements
Players must live within HLL's territorial boundaries in order to participate in our league. Our territory includes Hillsborough, San Mateo Park, Burlingame west of El Camino, and Millbrae west of El Camino or north of Millbrae Ave. Please consult our boundary map before you register with HLL.
Team Assignment Policy
Upper level teams (Baseball Majors, Baseball Minors, Baseball AAA and Softball Majors) are selected via a draft process based on tryouts / workouts results. Lower level teams are randomly assigned, although we try to ensure that players have teammates from the same school and grade. Coach and/or teammate requests can be made as part of the registration process, however these requests cannot be guaranteed. An exception will be made for children of team managers / coaches (who will be assigned to their parents' team), and for siblings in the same division (who will be assigned to the same team).
Closed Divisions
HLL tries to make room for all interested players, however we are sometimes faced with having to close divisions as they fill up. We encourage you to register as early as possible in order to secure a place in our league. If the division you are interested in joining is closed, please contact us so that we may add you to our waiting list.
Youth Umpire Program
HLL employs youth umpires for Baseball Majors and Minors and Softball Majors games. Candidates must be at least 13 years old and have experience playing baseball or softball. Umpires will be selected based on availability, baseball / softball knowledge, maturity and experience. Umpires are required to attend two training sessions. Umpires are expected to work one game per weekend, and may elect to work 3-4 games per week. Umpires are paid $15 per game to start and as much as $30 per game for veteran umpires, or may elect to receive community service hours in lieu of being paid. HLL graduates are preferred but past HLL participation is not required. Openings are limited and not all applicants will be selected.
